WXCharts has forecasted that snow will hit across the UK on January 5, bringing with it low temperatures and rain for parts of the country.

Maps generated on December 27 suggest snow will fall the heaviest in central Scotland (Aberdeen, Inverness, Grampians). It will also fall in north and south Scotland (Wick, Edinburgh, Dumfries), north England (Carlisle, Lancaster, Manchester, Sheffield).

There will be snow in Norfolk, north Wales (Conwy) and Northern Ireland (Derry). Rain will come behind the snow, sweeping across the west coast, the maps suggest.

Temperatures will be lowest in central Scotland, sitting between -1C and -3C. The rest of Scotland and northern England will be from 0C and 1C.

The Midlands, Wales and Northern Ireland will be between 2C to 3C and the south of England and East Anglia will be between 4C and 8C.

In its long-range forecast, covering the period between January 1 and 10, the Met Office said: “Showers of rain and sleet will turn increasingly to snow, especially across the north.

“This cold, showery northerly may persist for a few days before high pressure builds from the west, bringing a period of more settled weather.

“Although it will feel cold at first, temperatures will gradually recover to nearer average for the time of year, perhaps even mild. Beyond th is, a fairly changeable picture is most likely although confidence in details is, as usual at this range, very low.”
