Shocking new weather maps have revealed that the UK is bracing for a sub-zero weekend as temperatures plummet to -3C, with some areas bracing for snow.

The new maps by WX Charts show a band of freezing air hovering over most of the UK at 6am on Sunday. There will be a chill felt all around, but Scotland will be particularly affected.

Areas in the north, such as Inverness and Wick, could see a bitterly cold night of -2C, while many other surrounding areas, such as Edinburgh and Aberdeen, may struggle to get above freezing.

Further south, the maps also show northern parts of England, including Newcastle and Manchester, could see temperatures plunging to as low as 0C.

Millions of others living in areas such as London, Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham, Leeds and Cardiff could see the mercury fall to lows of between 2C and 6C.

Snow is also forecast for some areas of Scotland later on Saturday, exacerbating the already icy temperatures. Fort William, Glencoe, and the surrounding areas are at the highest risk with up to 10cm/hr expected.

Elsewhere, areas to the south and east of Inverness could see a maximum of 1cm/hr over the weekend. Luckily, all other areas of the UK and Ireland will manage to avoid the snow.

Earlier this week, the Met Office issued its long-range weather forecast for the UK, revealing that mid-October will likely bring bands of cloud, rain, and strong winds.

As high-pressure systems begin to dominate, frost and fog during the nights are expected, as well as significant differences between daytime and overnight temperatures.

Met Office meteorologist Jonathan Vautrey warned of the impending cold snap. He said: “For everyone, we’re going to be feeling rather cold.

“Over the last day or so we have drawn in quite a bit of cold air from the Arctic and that is sort of staying with us right throughout the weekend, so most of us will need a little bit of a coat on around at times.”

Sunday should bring some restbite with less rainfall, though there is still the threat of low temperatures. Vautrey explained: “For everyone, whilst it will be drier than Saturday, it is certainly going to be feeling quite, quite cold out there.”

Milder temperatures are forecast for large parts of England, particularly in the south. The sub-zero temperatures will bypass Devon, Cornwall, and Southampton, which will all be around 3C.
