The supermoon arrives in London! Jawdropping photo shows amazing lunar effect dominating the skyline behind The Shard _ Hieuuk
Stargazers in London were in for a treat on Tuesday night, as a rare blue supermoon slowly passed behind the iconic Shard.
Images have captured the spectacular moment the earth’s satellite lit up the sky as it moved in the shadow of Europe’s tallest building.
The moon was also captured illuminating the Thames as it rose over Tower Bridge in central London.
Elsewhere in the UK, images have emerged of the rare moon hanging over the Dungeness lighthouse in Kent.
A supermoon occurs only three or four times a year as the moon reaches its closest point to Earth.
The near full Super Blue Moon rises over The Shard through a band of cloud in central London. This August’s full moon, known as The Sturgeon moon is a Supermoon, the first of four this year, is also called a Blue Moon as it is the third full moon of an astronomical season that has four full moons

A supermoon is visible over the new Dungeness lighthouse in Kent.
This will be the first of four consecutive supermoons this year, with the full moons in September and October virtually tied for the closest of the year.
That makes our lunar satellite appear up to 14 per cent larger and a third brighter than normal, leading to some truly spectacular views while the moon is full for the next three days.
This lunar display is even rarer than a standard supermoon, as it coincides with the first blue moon since August last year and will appear dark red due to wildfire ash in the atmosphere.
A blue moon is not named after the colour, but for the timing of full moons during the year.
The moon has also been called the green corn moon, the grain moon, and the red moon for the reddish colour it often takes on in the summer haze.
Stunning images of the fiery orange moon in all its glory have also been shared online, as it acted as the perfect backdrop to some of the world’s most iconic landmarks.
In Turkey, the moon was seen rising above Sultanahmet Mosque, while yesterday, it was pictured hanging above San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge.
But you’d better make sure to get a good look this evening – as there won’t be another blue supermoon until 2037!
