he Met Office has issued weather warnings from 7am on Saturday until 9pm on Sunday with power cuts possible.
99 UK areas could face possible power cuts this weekend
The UK has been hit with a two-day weather warning affecting 99 areas in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland
The Met Office has issued a series of yellow weather warnings for this weekend, starting from 7am on Saturday, December 21 and lasting until 9pm on Sunday.
It means that for almost the entire weekend, much of the UK faces potential disruption due to heavy winds.
Households are being urged to take steps to prepare for the extreme weather, as forecasters also warn that delays to travel could be possible too.
Strong winds are set to blow much of the UK this weekend
The Met Office said: “A prolonged period of strong winds will likely lead to some disruption over the weekend, especially to travel.
“Some delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport are likely
“It’s likely that some coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities will be affected by spray and/or large waves.
“Some short term loss of power and other services is possible. Delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges likely.
“Strong and gusty northwesterly winds are expected to develop on Sunday. Gusts of 50-60 mph are expected quite widely, and around some exposed coasts and hills of gusts 70 mph are possible, especially in the north and west. In addition, squally showers are likely with some hail and thunder possible in places.
The Met Office has issued several yellow weather warnings for wind on Sunday
“This has the potential to cause delays to public transport and some disruption to the road network, which may have a greater than usual impact given the busier pre-Christmas weekend travel. Dangerous coastal conditions can be expected too, with large waves an additional hazard.”
Anyone who does face a power cut is being urged to call 105, which is the emergency number for the National Grid’s power cut reporting service.
It’s also advised to charge phones up and get spare batteries, battery packs and torches in case of an emergency such as a loss of power.
