Keir Starmer is facing calls for another general election after a petition demanding one gained over 400,000 signatures.

Launched just four days ago, the “Call a general election” petition suddenly gained massive momentum overnight, despite the country already going to the polls five times in the last 10 years.

At the time of writing it currently has a whopping 456,000 signatures, earning it the title of Britain’s fastest-growing petition ever.

The Government is obliged to respond to all petitions that garner more than 10,000 signatures. Any petition that amasses over 100,000 signatures will be considered for a debate in Parliament, although this is not guaranteed.

The petition was set up by Michael Westwood, who argues that “the current Labour Government have gone back on the promises they laid out in the lead up to the last election”.

It has garnered the attention of Reform UK MPs, who are rallying the public to sign the petition to express their frustration with Starmer’s leadership.

Richard Tice, the party’s deputy leader, urged: “Let’s make this the biggest petition ever in the UK – sign, share, and spread the word.”

Rupert Lowe MP added: “Register your discontent, register your anger, register your disgust with this Labour Government. Send Starmer a message. Sign, share, and share again.”

Ex-Tory MP Mark Jenkinson commented: “It looks like we’re heading for a parliamentary debate on having a general election.”

Labour has faced major backlash for introducing a series of measures that some argue go against their manifesto promises that help them secure a landline victory in July.

Axing Winter Fuel Paymnets and announcing a Budget that included £40bn in tax increases were particularly criticised.

Despite being one of the most supported petitions in parliamentary history, the call for a general election still has some way to go before it takes the top spot.

A 2016 petition demanding a super majority for the EU referendum to enact Brexit attracted over 4 million supporters.
