Nigel Farage has lashed out at Chancellor Rachel Reeves after the revelations about her doctoring her online CV, taking to social media to deliver a scathing putdown in which he suggested her job once amounted to “ordering the paper clips”.

Ms Reeves has faced significant criticism after allegations surfaced that she misrepresented her work history as an economist.

Reports carried the Guido Fawkes website revealed that, contrary to her claims of serving as an “economist” at the Bank of Scotland from 2006 to 2009, her role involved administrative and planning tasks within a support unit.

The discrepancy has prompted significant backlash, with claims of dishonesty levelled against the Labour politician and Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer’s right-hand woman.

waded in on X, posting: “Rachel Reeves told us that she was an economist.

“In reality she ordered the paper clips instead.”

In response to the revelations, Ms Reeves discreetly updated her LinkedIn profile to amend her job description.

Her previous title of “economist” was altered to “retail banking,” reportedly to better align with her actual responsibilities during her tenure.

One Treasury source clarified: “She worked in retail banking covering various areas drawing on her background as an economist. Her LinkedIn has been updated to reflect that.”

Nevertheless, critics have argued her move was a tacit admission of misleading the public. The controversy has drawn other sharp rebukes from Conservative politicians and commentators.

One Tory spokesperson claimed her “employment history claims are about as accurate as her promises not to raise taxes on working people – based on deception and increasingly proved false.”

Recently defeated Tory leadership challenger Robert Jenrick said: “Reeves said she was an economist. Turns out she’s just economical with the truth.”

Others have been even more scathing, with Chris Rose calling for her resignation, asserting: “Instead of admitting that she lied, she has tried to alter the lie.”

The timing of the backlash coincided with grim economic news. Fresh ONS data revealed that the UK’s GDP growth has stagnated, rising by only 0.1% during Ms Reeves’ first three months as Chancellor.

Critics have blamed her “doom and gloom” rhetoric before the Budget for undermining economic confidence.

Despite her celebrated history at the Bank of England and previous claims of economic expertise, Ms Reeves is now facing mounting pressure over both her professional credibility and her performance in managing the country’s finances.

Express.co.uk has approached Ms Reeves via the Treasury and her Parliamentary office for comment.
