Manchester crash latest: Girl, 3, killed after tram hits van in busy city centre

The tragic news broke after a collision between a Metrolink tram and another vehicle on Mosley Street shut down traffic in central Manchester.

A three-year-old girl has been killed after being hit by a van in central Manchester during a horror Tram crash.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: “Emergency services are responding to reports of a collision involving a tram and a van in Manchester city centre.

They added: “A three-year-old girl was taken to hospital and has sadly passed away from her injuries. No arrests have been made and enquiries are ongoing.”

It’s understood that the child was walking when hit by the van after it rebounded from the tram crash, reports the Manchester Evening News.

The child was walking on Mosley Street when she was hit by a van following a collision with a tram, it is understood.

Large police presence

Several police officers, including detectives, remain at the scene. Enquiries are reportedly taking place now too.

White van involved has

The M.E.N reports the other vehicle involved as being a white Mercedes-Benz van which “appears to have suffered minor damage to the driver’s side”.

The vehicles involved in the collision remain in place.

Mosley Street closed off

Streets surrounding Mosley Street have been blocked off as police remain present at the scene.

A Transport for Greater Manchester spokesperson said:

“Due to a road traffic collision on Mosley Street in the city centre, no tram services are operating between St Peter’s Square and Piccadilly Gardens.

“As a result, there are several service changes in place.

“Services will operate as follows: Manchester Airport and Bury to Altrincham services will travel via via 2cc [Exchange Square]; Altrincham – Manchester Victoria via Exchange Square; MediaCityUk – Crumpsall via Exchange Square; Ashton-under-Lyne – Crumpsall via Market Street and Shudehill.

“There is a step-free walking route between St Peter’s Square and Piccadilly Gardens which will take you approximately seven minutes.”

Severe transport delays

Transport for Greater Manchester says there are severe delays on all Metrolink lines.

Metrolink tickets and passes are being accepted on local bus services and Northern Rail services (from Altrincham and Manchester Airport) to the city centre.
