A man has been charged with tresspassing after climbing Elizabeth Tower housing Big Ben. Footage was widely shared online of the individual perched on the Palace of Westminster on Saturday.

Now, police have charged Daniel Day, 29, of Palmerston Road, Westcliff-on-Sea, Essex, with causing a public nuisance and trespassing on a protected site. He has been remanded in custody and is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates Court

 today. Officers were first called at 7.24am to reports of a protester having climbed up the tower. The incident lead to the closure of Westminster Bridge, Bridge Street and part of the area’s Tube station. Tours of the Parliamentary estate were also stopped.

The man, who was barefoot, was eventually brought down using a cherry picker at midnight.

He was up there for 16 hours.

Police described the incident as a “protracted” one after the man had been arrested once he reached the ground.

A small group of supporters were heard behind a police cordon near the tower shouting “free Palestine” and “you are a hero”, the BBC reports.
