A man has been charged with the alleged murder of a London bus driver who was stabbed to death after officers stopped him at Notting Hill Carnival over the August bank holiday weekend. 

Detectives had previously issued an appeal to locate Kamar Williams who was wanted in connection with the fatal stabbing of 53-year-old bus driver Derek Thomas in Stoke Newington. It was initially believed Williams had bolted over 230 miles from London to Devon or Cornwall.

Williams, 33, from the Isle of Dogs, was arrested on Monday, August 26 after being spotted by police in attendance at Notting Hill Carnival. He was charged with murder and possession of a knife on Tuesday, August 27.

Williams will appear in custody at Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, August 28. Derek’s family has been informed and continue to be supported by specialist officers. A 30-year-old woman was arrested on Saturday, August 3 on suspicion of assisting an offender and taken into custody. She was later released on bail.

In the latest update by police given today a spokseperson confirmed that there were 349 arrests over the weekend 102 on Sunday and 247 on Monday during the carnival, offences ranged from possession of offensive weapons to harassment.
