Labour cannot be trusted to get Migration under control says Christ Philp
It’s not ‘radical’ to say that immigration is far, far too high. For ordinary Britons across the UK, it’s just common sense. And I agree.
The services we and our families use every day are struggling under the weight of an ever-increasing population, house building is not keeping pace with demand, and the financial burden on the state is climbing. The figures we saw this week – while still far too high – at last showed a decrease as Conservative policies introduced in the last year or so begin to bite.
We’ve only just started seeing the impact of these, with a drop in student dependants – that’s people who come in as a family member of a university student – thanks to our move to scrap them. The ONS has said the fall in net migration was driven because of the fall in dependants arriving on study visas.
And, if Labour don’t bin the policies we put in place to bring migration down, we’ll see further reductions in the future. Student dependent visas and health care dependant visas have dropped by 84 per cent and 74 per cent respectively – thanks to our restrictions on both.
This means fewer people entering the country and making use of services, benefits systems, and housing, without contributing to the workforce or paying taxes. By contrast, Labour has no plan to get the influx of migrants under control.
They have already hinted that they’ll bin our restrictions on student visas, and we all know what that means – they’ll open the floodgates again. Yet as the problems caused by unchecked and unfettered immigration continue to bite, the Labour Government continues to turn a blind eye.
Kemi Badenoch is said to have a plan to control migration
Over one million people in the UK cannot speak proper English. Amongst some nationalities, workforce participation is at or below 50 per cent. More than 70 per cent of school children in one part of London do not speak English as a first language.
A lack of integration, paired with every greater influx of immigrants, is having a real and tangible impact on the day-to-day life of people. Yes, there is a case for limited numbers of very highly skilled migrants to come here who contribute financially, provided that they integrate.
But we simply cannot allow mass low-skilled immigration, dragging down our economy and increasingly hiking the financial burden on the taxpayer. Labour cannot be trusted to get this under control.
Their approach to immigration is to kowtow to lefty lawyers and demonise those who speak out about the impacts of unfettered immigration. However, the Conservatives under new leadership are not afraid to tell the truth about immigration.
We know that a new radical approach is now needed to dramatically reduce immigration. We also know that serious mistakes have been made in the past. Our new Leader, Kemi Badenoch, has a resolute focus and determination to grab this challenge by the horns and get in place a new serious and actionable plan that we can take to the British people.
We will bring in a strict biding cap on migration that is far, far lower than current numbers and we will ensure that the pathway to citizenship is a privilege to be earned, not a right that is owed. And we will ensure that access to benefits only follows when real contributions have been made by the migrant.
We will also bring about an effective deterrent against those who seek to enter this country illegally – they must be rapidly removed if they enter illegally. It is as simple as that. Labour should never have cancelled the Rwanda deterrent plan before it even started. That’s why small boat crossings are up 23% under Labour.
It’s just common sense that immigration is far too high. A new approach is urgently needed. We have a new Leader who has the courage to do this. These changes will be radical, but there is no alternative.
