In an interconnected and volatile world, global problems reach directly into the lives of people here. The war in Ukraine and conflicts in the Middle East and Africa have a direct impact on security and migration at home.

Conflicts around the world lead prices to skyrocket on our fuel and food. Climate change drives down economic growth and leaves us exposed to catastrophic flooding. And countries like Russia and Iran are ready to stir up trouble on our streets.

The British people want their government to tackle these issues head on. To stand up to tyrants. To work with allies like the US and Europe to strengthen our security. To leave no stone unturned to help drive economic growth at home. That is my job – and I’m proud to do it, representing Britain on the world stage with all our incredible history and tradition at my back. Because from our ship building prowess to our role rebuilding Europe after WW2, Britain does best when we don’t cut ourselves off from the wider world.

So this week, when I go the summit of G20 leaders in Brazil, I will fly the flag for British interests once again.

What does this mean for Sunday Express readers? Let me give you a few examples.

Last month our International Investment Summit brought a record-breaking £63 billion of investment to the UK. That means high quality jobs up and down the country – improving lives for working people. We were able to deliver that astonishing sum precisely because we are rebuilding our relationships around the world and restoring stability to our economy. People can see that Britain is back on the world stage – and so they’re ready to back Britain.

Last week I was at the COP climate conference, to drive down bills. To secure our energy independence from gas-hoarding tyrants like Putin. And to win the economic opportunities the fight against climate change is creating for British workers

By putting the UK in pole position in the race for clean energy, we are securing a dividend. A first-mover’s advantage. That’s what our new company GB Energy is all about. And we’re delivering. Look at the new carbon capture projects in Tyneside and Merseyside that are set to create thousands of jobs.

Just last week, we announced another British manufacturing win with a £1 billion wind turbine contract which will create high-skilled jobs in Hull – followed by even more jobs such as engineers, electricians or welders across the supply chain.

International cooperation is also vital in our fight to stop illegal migration by smashing the people smuggling gangs. It is outrageous that they have been able to operate a criminal empire across Europe and beyond for too long. So now we are working with partners to bring them to justice.

On Thursday a man was arrested, suspected of being a major supplier of small boats equipment – thanks to a British operation in partnership with the Netherlands and Belgium. This is exactly what we want to see – working with international partners to hunt down organised criminals and hit them with the full force of the law.

Earlier this month I signed new agreements with Serbia, Kosovo and North Macedonia, to break up the migration routes coming through those countries. And I’ll continue to work closely with my European counterparts, particularly in Italy, Germany and France to develop our collaboration. Because it works.

Everything we do abroad must be focused on making us strong at home. And we must build our strength by working with others who share our goals – especially when it comes to defence.

The budget provided £2.9 billion of additional funding for defence, cementing our position as Europe’s leading NATO ally. It also guaranteed our continued support to Ukraine. Because if there’s one thing that we will never stand for it is tyrants like Putin trying to get their way by aggression and brutality. We will always stand firm against that aggression – and stand side-by-side with Ukraine, for as long as it takes.

Let’s be clear – these global problems are connected. A world of deeper conflicts and catastrophic climate change would lead to even greater waves of migration and a fatal blow economic growth.

So we must be strong to protect Britain from that future. We should look out to the world now with confidence – buoyed by strong alliances, ready to stand up for our principles.

That’s what I’ll be doing at the G20 summit this week – delivering for the British people. And every meeting I have, every agreement I enter into, will be about bringing more jobs, more prosperity and more security home to the UK – and delivering a better future for our country.
