The older voter blaster the new Labour MP and his party as liars following yesterday’s vote in favour of cutting winter fuel allowance for millions.

5 Live: Pensioner lays into Labour MP over Winter Fuel Allowance vote

A Labour MP has been brutally torn apart by a furious member of the public over his vote in favour of slashing winter fuel payments for millions.

Jeevun Sandher was appearing on BBC 5Live’s political phone-in programme when he was hit with a tirade of anger, and was sheepishly forced to admit he had backed the welfare cut in yesterday’s Commons vote.

Caller Margaret demanded an explanation for why MPs had voted in favour of the cut, all while being able to claim energy costs for their second properties on expenses.

Her attack came hours after it was revealed Rachel Reeves herself billed the taxpayer more than £4,000 for the last five years-worth of energy bills.

Margaret blasted: “You want to look after the older people, you’ve just stated that, you want to look after people in this country – but you’re not doing that are you? You’re not doing that!”

“This is what makes me very cross – every one of you that’s an MP can claim expenses, you can claim your heating!

“Alright, we can all cut our heating back, we can cut our electricity back, but you think about it – electricity’s going up 10% and gas is going up around 14%.”

Turning on Mr Sandher’s claim that Labour wants to look after British people, Margaret then demanded to know why the Government is targeting older people’s living standards while sending billions abroad in foreign aid.

“Why are we giving so much money away? Why are we spending millions every week for the hotels?

“Why are we sending money over to China? Why are we sending money over to India? We have all this, but you still want to look after the people of this country? Well somehow I don’t think that’s true!”

Refusing to draw breath, the furious caller then turned fire on Sir Keir Starmer, accusing the Prime Minister of lying during the General Election.

While Labour’s manifesto made no mention of winter fuel payments, when this omission was spotted by journalists during the campaign Labour sources insisted the policies would continue and there were no plans to change eligibility for the handouts.

Margaret fumed: “As for Keir Starmer, he lied in his manifesto, and so to me that’s deceitful. He was deceitful then so he’s going to be deceitful in government.”

Mr Sandher insisted that Labour is helping Britain’s poorest pensioners by doubling the pension credit enrolment and maintaining the household support fund.

He argued that about 40% of pensioners will be eligible for an extra payment this year to help with their heating bills.

However, there are wider concerns about the uptake of pension credit, even with the extra resources the Government is putting in to encourage sign-ups.

The Loughborough MP said: “I am proud of this government, and I have absolute faith in Keir and Rachel.”

“I couldn’t be more excited to see what we’re going to achieve in the months and years ahead.”

Margaret simply replied: “God help us.”
