A suspected gunshot struck a taxi carrying Have I Got News For You star Ian Hislop, it has been reported.

According to the Guardian, the Private Eye editor was in the back of the black cab in Soho, central London, when a suspected bullet struck the vehicle’s back window.

The incident happened shortly after 10am on Tuesday on Dean Street near Private Eye’s office, the newspaper said.

Both Hislop and the taxi driver were uninjured in the incident and officers closed the roads around the scene, it added.

A source told the Guardian that police are keeping an open mind as to any motive.

In a statement, the Metropolitan Police said it was called “to a report of a firearms discharge”.

“The driver of a London black taxi reported he was stationary in traffic when a shot was fired towards his vehicle, striking the window,” the force added.

“There were no injuries. An investigation has been launched.”

Hislop has been editor of Private Eye since 1986 and a panellist on the BBC’s satirical quiz show Have I Got News For You since it began in 1990.
