One man needed hospital treatment after the fracas, and was subsequently arrested.
Masked thugs armed with machetes are seen brawling in the streets of Southend in a shocking clip shared on social media – barely two months after similar violence had erupted on the Essex city’s seafront.
Essex Police confirmed they are investigating reports of an assault in Southchurch Road just after 12.15am on Sunday, September 15. Officers attended the scene within 10 minutes.
The footage has been condemned by local councillor Daniel Nelson, who urged residents to remain “vigilant” after the “disgraceful” scenes.
One man suffered injuries and received hospital treatment, although his injuries were neither life-threatening nor life-changing.
The 32-year-old, from Coventry, has been arrested on suspicion of affray and remains in custody for questioning.
Enquiries are ongoing around Southend and police continue to maintain a visible presence in the area.
Specialist officers within the Force’s Serious Crime Directorate are leading the investigation and officers will be undertaking patrols throughout the coming days.
Chief Inspector Paul Hogben said: “I would ask anyone who may have information about this incident, or concerns, to please get in touch with us as soon as possible.
“We take incidents of this nature very seriously and the Southend community can expect a robust response and investigation.
“We have a dedicated team conducting the investigation into this incident and we will issue updates as we progress.”
Anyone with information should contact us Essex Police’s Live Chat service via its website. Witnesses can also 101.
Posting on X Cllr Nelson, who spoke to the Express about his concerns after similar unrelated footage showing youths brawling with weapons on July 29, said: “These scenes are disgraceful.
“Well done to @EssexPoliceUK for making arrests. Once again, it must be reiterated Southend remains a safe place to live, work and visit. But we must remain vigilant, these mask wearing thugs have no place in our city.”
