Ed Balls let loose on a Labour MP on Monday as he clashed with Angela Eagle over immigration laws. He accused the Minister of State for Border Security and Asylum for being “too soft” on illegal immigrants as she appeared on ITV’s Good Morning Britain.

Comparing the UK’s immigration control to America’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Ed asked: “They’re very tough. The conditions that they keep people in are very harsh. I just wondered are we just too soft? Do we need to toughen up the ways in which we keep people if they fail asylum claims, rather than paying for them to be put up in hotels?”

Angela stuttered as she weakly said: “Well… They’re not paid to be in hotels if they fail their asylum.” Ed cut in as he said: “But they are, in their tens of thousands.

“You can’t get rid of them. I mean there are all these people who have not had an asylum claim not only processed but even if they are, we can’t send them back to another country. We pay for them to be in comfortable conditions to live in for years.”

The Minister stuttered as she replied: “No, we try to return every single person. Each jurisdiction has to do what it thinks is necessary in its own particular country. But I think the things that we have in common, what the Summit is going to be talking about today, is the gangs, who they are and how we can deal with them.”

It comes as Prime Minister Keir Starmer will today host a summit for 40 nations to step up the fight against the “vile trade” of people smuggling.

However, fans at home hit out at Ed – who is married to Labour’s Secretary of State for the Home Department, Yvette Cooper. Posting to X (formerly Twitter), one wrote: “Have a word with your wife then @edballs. Quite incredible that you are allowed to conduct this interview when you think of who Angela Eagle’s boss is?? @Ofcom is this right or do you just not care anymore?”

Another added: “This is Yvette Cooper’s job for f**ks sake. She’s the Home Secretary, she said Labour would ’SMASH THE GANGS’. The rise in small boat crossings is happening on her watch. If she can’t do her job, then she should be sacked! Ed Balls criticising Angela Eagle was ridiculous!”
