Around 780,000 pensioners in England and Wales are set to lose their winter fuel allowance because they are not expected to apply for benefits they are entitled to, according to the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).

The “equalities analyses” predicted many people entitled to pension credit – and therefore eligible for fuel payments under the new rules – will not submit a claim, and therefore lose the subsidy altogether.

Taking to X on Saturday (September 14) Carol, a staunch supporter of the Labour Party, urged the government to rethink their policy, while social media users claimed she “backed the wrong horse”.

The presenter tweeted: “[Angry-face emoji] Scrapping winter fuel allowance for all but those on Pension Credit is wrong wrong wrong.

They have to remember that millions of all ages loaned their vote to Labour to get rid of the corrupted Tory party.

“Now look after those voters.”

Her 989,000 followers flocked to comment on the post as some argued Carol urged voters to support Labour.

One penned: “You backed the wrong horse.”

A second tweeted: “Oh the irony…” While a third said: “Never again Carol.”

A fourth added: “I won’t vote Labour ever again.”

Another commented: “Sorry, Carol, but you’re mistaken on this. Many of us pensioners – if not most – don’t need the WFA. Concentrate on ensuring that those who do need it, get it!”

Others supported Carol’s stance as one penned: “The policy is right – the baseline is wrong. There are millions of pensioners who do not need it so it is right not to waste taxpayer money BUT any policy first needs to ensure those in need do receive it. Should be based on tax rather than a benefit cut-off point.”

Carol replied: “Absolutely agree. I’ve been on the media rounds this week saying the same thing.”

Another remarked: “They’ve really messed up. They just need to review the threshold. Many don’t need the wfa but many do need it. Labour is supposed to look after the working class but have got this wrong.”

No 10 has previously said it was not legally obliged to produce a full impact assessment on the decision to means test the benefit.

Under the changes, winter fuel allowance will still be available to those claiming pension credit and some other benefits, but around 10 million people are set to be stripped of the payment.
