America’s first black president is devoting his considerable political capital to Ms. Harris, who could make history if she becomes the first black and Asian American president.

“We don’t need four more years of bombast, clumsiness and chaos. We’ve seen that movie before and we all know the sequels are usually worse,” Obama stressed in his speech on the second night of the convention in Chicago.

“America is ready for a new chapter. America is ready for a better story. We are ready for a president named Kamala Harris,” he said.

Mr. Obama criticized Mr. Trump and praised President Joe Biden.

“History will remember Joe Biden as a president who defended democracy at a time of great danger. I am proud to call him my president, but even prouder to call him my friend,” Obama said, receiving enthusiastic applause from the audience.

In her speech, Michelle did not shy away from warning that Trump would try to distort the truth about Harris, just as he had done “everything in his power to make people afraid of us.”

“His limited and narrow view of the world makes him feel threatened by the existence of two hardworking, highly educated, successful people who are also people of color,” Michelle said to thunderous applause.

Previously, Mr. Trump repeatedly made racist statements and questioned Mr. Obama’s nationality, and recently made similar statements about Ms. Harr is.

As the Democratic National Convention got underway, Ms. Harris joined her vice presidential candidate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, on stage in Milwaukee, where the Republican National Convention was held last month.

In her speech, Harris criticized Trump for saying he had no regrets about the Supreme Court’s 2022 decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, a 1973 decision that recognized a woman’s right to an abortion . Three justices appointed by Trump played a major role in the decision.

“I believe that bad behavior has consequences. Well, we’re going to make sure he faces consequences and that will happen at the ballot box in November,” Harris said.

Democrats have made abortion rights a major campaign issue.
