Boris Johnson has slammed the nation’s children as “fatsos” amid an obesity crisis in Britain.
The former prime minister said that when he was younger it was “very rare for there to be a fatso in the class”.
He added: “Now they’re all fatsos, and I’d be shot for saying they’re fatsos, but it’s the truth”.
Mr Johnson has blamed the Church of England for Britain’s obesity crisis, saying that its failure to provide people with the “spiritual sustenance” they need is leading people to “gorge themselves”.
In 2022–2023, 64% of adults in England were either overweight or obese. Obesity rates increase with age, peaking between the ages of 55 and 64.
Meanwhile in 2023–2024, 9.6% of children in reception year (four to five years old) were obese, and 22.1% of children in year six (10 to 11 years old) were obese.
Mr Johnson said: “When I was a kid, we were all out playing in the streets the whole time. You don’t see that with kids nowadays.. Now they’re all fatsos, and I’d be shot for saying they’re fatsos, but that’s the truth.
“People were skinnier, they ran around a huge amount, they drank phenomenal quantities of Tizer, they ate Spangles and Curly Wurlies and dog s*** and nowadays kids are sitting on screens and being told that it’s too dangerous to go outside because there are paedophiles everywhere apparently.”
Mr Johsnon attempted to bolster his government’s obesity policy after nearly dying from coronavirus.
He said: “Covid was hitting Britain particularly badly because we were so fat and I had my own experience in ICU.. I noticed it was all middle-aged men and quite fat.. and I came out of that thinking crikey, we’ve got to sort this out.”
