A major cold spell is set to hit the UK imminently with snow forecast in regions as far south as London and Plymouth.
A major cold spell will hit all parts of the UK with snow and ice warnings in place
The UK is set to be plunged into the deep freezer with snow predicted to sweep across the country on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.
The Met Office has issued snow and ice warnings for parts of Scotland and England as much colder weather is set to arrive across the UK from tomorrow, Sunday, November 16.
The cause for this weather, which is unusual for this time of the year, is caused by an Arctic air mass which was pushed southwards, turning the air progressively colder.
Some transport disruption is possible during this change in weather as frost and plunging temperatures also set to bite. Heavy snow has been forecasted for parts of Scotland, Wales and England.
Snow is forecast for next week on new weather maps.
The change in weather is said to be due to a blocking area of high pressure which built across Greenland with this cold Arctic air being emptied out across parts of the UK.
Brits can expect bitter northerly winds to develop which will bring frequent showers, likely to fall as sleet and rain for those in coastal areas.
Drivers have been warned of these weather warnings but as the ground in November is not as cold, some of the snow hitting the roads will most likely melt.
Northern Scotland will experience some snow showers in the upcoming days with, around 5cm – 10cm of snow building up with areas in the lower region likely to be hit by Monday.
The Met Office warned of “a major change in the weather from this weekend” as an “early winter cold spell arrives bringing the potential for disruption for some next week.”
They added that by Sunday, the low pressure will move in causing unsettled and much colder weather.
“A notable early winter cold spell will arrive across the north from Sunday and will likely reach all parts of the UK by midweek,” said Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist Rebekah Hicks.
She added: “Temperatures will drop as a northerly airflow develops, bringing in colder Arctic air. This introduces the possibility of snow, initially over high ground in the north from Sunday, with gusty winds also a potential hazard.”
New data from WXCarts revealed that a number of UK cities could experience snow this weekend with the unsettled weather continuing into next week.
These snowy conditions will Scotland, Wales and England with some areas as far south as Plymouth
The data found that areas including Newcastle, Manchester, Birmingham, London and even Plymouth could be struck with snow.
“There is a lot of uncertainty in what might happen after Sunday, but there are a number of scenarios which could bring some more widespread rain, along with some hill snow and stronger winds,” explained Hicks.
“It is possible that there may be some more widespread snowfall across lower ground, but the chance of this for any given region is low at this stage. What we do know is that the whole of the UK is likely to experience a spell of several days of cold, potentially disruptive weather next week.
“Warnings for wintry hazards, including snow and ice, are possible, so it’s important to stay up to date with the latest forecast.”
