The UK is bracing for an onslaught of cold weather conditions as the country is expected to see snowfall over a 30-hour period, reaching as far south as Devon.

From 6pm on November 6 until midnight on November 8, a mixture of snow, rain, and cold winds is set to sweep across the country, bringing temperatures to as low as -2C.

While there will be highs of 4C, some areas will be hit with sub-zero conditions. These include north Wales, Yorkshire, and areas of north Scotland.

Isolated incidents of snowfall are also expected over two and a half days, including much of Scotland, Wales, and surprisingly, Devon.

In Scotland, the worst affected area, up to 3cm/hr of snowfall is expected. Down south in Devon, there will be a lighter dusting of around 0.3cm/hr.

Other areas that will experience similarly bitterly cold winds are Herefordshire, close to the border with Wales, Lincolnshire, and Cumbria.

In Scotland, the wind chill will be even colder, with the worst affected areas near Cairngorms National Park dropping to nearly -10C.

Maps show a fierce jet stream from the Arctic bringing the cold weather to Britain.

In the near future, snow is also predicted to fall in areas of Scotland by the end of today. The north of the country is expected to see up to 3cm/hr before 6pm on October 23.

This is predicted for Talmine, Tongue, Kylesku, Lairg, Ullapool, Dingwall, Garve, Kinlochewe, Strathcarron, Cannich, Fort Augustus, and Mallaig.

Looking ahead to the rest of this week, conditions will turn unsettled from the west through Thursday and into Friday, with rain and brisk winds pushing eastwards.

The weather will remain unsettled on Saturday, with further rain and showers, but temperatures will be nearer average.

The Met Office forecasts

The Met Office‘s three-to-five-day forecast for the UK says: “More widely unsettled, with outbreaks of rain affecting most areas at times, locally heavy. Often windy with a risk of gales in some exposed areas. Temperatures generally near to normal.”

Its long range forecast for November 6-20 reads: “A change in the broad weather pattern over the UK is expected towards mid-November and beyond, as high pressure initially over the nearby continent tends to become more focussed to the north or northwest of the UK.

“This may allow areas of low pressure, south-shifted from their more typical tracks, to approach southern UK and bring rain or showers at times.

“As a result, after a relatively dry start to the month in the south and east it is likely to become wetter than average here, while conversely northwestern areas, after a wetter start to the month, will tend to revert to drier than average conditions.

“Temperatures will probably be close to average for much of this period as a whole, although some colder interludes are possible.”
