Sir Keir Starmer is seen as a “liar” by voters, according to a new poll.

Polling company Savanta asked respondents to describe the Prime Minister in one word.

The word cloud shows that “liar” is the most prominent response from the 2,000 people surveyed ahead of his keynote speech to the Labour conference.

Other common replies are “useless”, “boring”, “idiot”, “weak” and “untrustworthy”, as well as “good” and “strong”.

In comparison, the word “boring” was most widely given to describe Sir Keir when Savanta carried out the same polling last year.

The pollsters also found that the Prime Minister’s popularity with the public has dropped by 26 points since the election to minus 11.

Sir Keir’s net favourability has also plunged among Labour voters from plus 71 to plus 43 in polls taken from September 20-22.

Chris Hopkins, political research director at Savanta, said: “Our findings really do show the challenge that Keir Starmer faces as he stands up to make his first conference speech as Prime Minister.

“While he is still relatively popular among his own voters, he has absolutely seen a nosedive in support since the election, which was less than three months ago.

“The cumulative impacts of the summer unrest, the unpopular winter fuel allowance decision and ongoing questions around donations and hospitality appear to have considerably hurt Starmer and his government’s popularity, when they should still be riding high post-election.”

It comes as Labour’s conference in Liverpool has been overshadowed by a freebies row and backlash over winter fuel payment cuts.

Sir Keir and other members of the Government including Rachel Reeves have come under fire for accepting donations towards items of clothes and tickets for sport and music events.

The Prime Minister has also faced fury, including from unions, over the decision to restrict the winter fuel allowance to only those on pension credit.
